TAI, RIVERS STATE — At least five youths are feared dead following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Mumba Community, situated within the Baah-Goi Special Area of Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The deadly altercation reportedly erupted on Tuesday after local youths staged a protest against the widespread destruction of farmland and crops by grazing cattle. According to community residents, the situation escalated rapidly when armed herders launched a retaliatory attack on the village shortly after the demonstration.
"The youths were only demanding an end to the destruction of their livelihoods, but the response was ruthless," one resident stated, requesting anonymity for safety reasons. "They invaded our community with weapons, leaving several people unaccounted for and at least five dead."
As of press time, security forces and the Rivers State Police Command have yet to issue an official statement regarding the casualties or confirm any arrests.
Tension remains palapable across the Baah-Goi Special Area, with panic-stricken residents fleeing neighboring farming settlements. Community leaders are now making an urgent appeal to state authorities and security agencies to deploy joint patrols immediately to restore order and avert further bloodshed.
