Argentine icon Lionel Messi has been named Major League Soccer’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The 37-year-old forward, who previously played for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, played a pivotal role in helping Inter Miami achieve a record points tally during the regular season, though the team was eliminated in the first round of the MLS Cup play-offs in November.

Messi led the league with 36 goal contributions, netting 20 goals and providing 16 assists. Despite being hampered by injuries that limited him to just 19 regular-season matches and two play-off appearances, he topped the MVP voting, securing 38.43% of the votes. He edged out Colombus Crew’s Cucho Hernandez, who earned 33.7%.

The Landon Donovan MLS MVP award, decided by votes from players, club staff, and journalists, has previously been won by notable players such as the USA’s Landon Donovan, Ireland’s Robbie Keane, and Spain’s David Villa.
