Jannik Sinner confirmed himself the best in the world in men's tennis with successive Australian Open titles in a commanding triumph over Alexander Zverev.
The top-seed Italian displayed his cool in key moments, defeating the second-ranked Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 for a third career Grand Slam title.
Despite a shadow over him in an ongoing drugs case, Sinner remained cool-headed through the tournament. He won with a pinpoint cross-court winner at his first chance for a match point, raising his arms in triumph coolly and then embracing his entourage.
Sinner’s standout campaign avoided a single break point for him when faced with Germany’s Zverev, and only lost two sets in his journey through Melbourne Park. The win displayed his relentless baseline tennis, physicality, and mental determination.
The 27-year-old Zverev struggled to react to Sinner’s approach and grew increasingly frustrated. It’s the German’s third defeat in a Grand Slam title, having fallen previously at 2020’s US Open and at 2024’s French Open, and is the sixth Open era player to fall in his first three majors finals.
After the match, a dispirited Zverev slumped in his seat, burying his head in a towel in an attempt to digest defeat.
