Explosion Hits Bayelsa Secretariat, Police Arrest 60-Year-Old Suspect

Tension gripped the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa early Wednesday after a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated within the premises, prompting a swift security response that led to the arrest of a suspect.

The incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on February 11, 2026, when an explosion was reported inside the government complex. Security operatives were immediately deployed to the scene to assess the situation and prevent further danger.

Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor psc, IICFIP, foosi, personally led a combined team comprising the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit and other tactical squads to secure the area.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed Anipr, foosi, operatives moved swiftly to neutralise potential threats.

“On arrival at the scene the operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Unit swiftly contained the explosion. The area was immediately cordoned off and upon detailed search one unexploded IED was indentified by EOD operatives and was rendered safe. No live lost, no property destroyed.”

Police said a 60-year-old man, Pentecost Elijah, from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. He is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Authorities disclosed that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Security presence remained heightened around the secretariat complex for several hours as officers conducted sweeps to rule out additional threats. However, police confirmed that normal activities have resumed.

The Command assured residents that the situation is under control and urged members of the public to remain calm while continuing with their lawful activities.
