Obio-Akpor Enforces Street Trading Ban as Task Force Clears Okoro Nodu–Rumuokoro Corridor

Commercial activities were disrupted on Wednesday around the Okoro Nodu–Rumuokoro flyover axis as the Obio-Akpor Local Government Council began full enforcement of its ban on roadside trading, sparking mixed reactions from affected traders.

Officials of the Obio-Akpor task force moved into the area in the early hours, evacuating traders operating along the flyover and adjoining roads in line with a directive earlier issued by the council chairman, Gift Worlu. The operation targeted street and market trading considered illegal within the busy traffic corridor.

Several traders expressed frustration over the development, saying the enforcement had worsened their already fragile economic situation. Some claimed they had previously been allowed to operate along the roadside after paying multiple taxes and levies to authorities.

“We were paying different levies before now and were allowed to sell here,” one trader lamented. “This is how we survive and feed our families, but since the ban, there has been no sales for us.”

During the exercise, traders were seen hurriedly packing and concealing their wares to avoid seizure, while some goods reportedly got damaged in the process as the task force cleared the area.

The local government had earlier justified the ban as part of efforts to restore order, ease traffic congestion and improve safety around the flyover, which serves as a major link for commuters in Port Harcourt and neighbouring communities.

While the council insists the enforcement is necessary to maintain a clean and secure environment, the latest operation highlights the growing tension between urban regulation and livelihood concerns, as affected traders call for alternative arrangements that would allow them earn a living without violating the law.
