Online Firestorm as Wizkid, Seun Kuti Clash Over Fela Legacy

Social media has been thrown into turmoil following a heated exchange between Afrobeat icon Wizkid and musician activist Seun Kuti, the youngest son of the late legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

The controversy began after Wizkid FC (fans of Wizkid) repeatedly compared the Grammy-winning singer to Fela, hailing him as a “modern-day Fela.” Seun Kuti, clearly displeased, publicly warned Wizkid’s fans to stop what he described as a “disrespectful comparison”, stressing that his father’s legacy as a revolutionary, activist, and cultural icon should not be trivialized or repackaged for pop culture praise.

Seun, who has continued Fela’s Afrobeat movement through Egypt 80, insisted that Fela’s life was dedicated to fighting oppression and championing African liberation, not fan wars or celebrity hype.

After days of online tension, Wizkid finally responded in a now-viral outburst that has since dominated timelines. In the middle of the rant, the singer dropped the line that has sparked massive backlash and debate:

“I big pass your papa.”

The statement immediately ignited outrage, with many netizens accusing Wizkid of crossing a cultural and moral line by dragging the late Fela into the feud. Critics described the remark as unnecessary and deeply disrespectful, while some fans defended Wizkid, framing it as a response provoked by sustained attacks.

Not one to back down, Seun Kuti responded fiercely, accusing Wizkid of benefiting from Fela’s legacy over the years and questioning his artistic depth. He also dismissed Wizkid’s music credibility and accused the singer of relying on controversies with fellow artistes to stay relevant.

Seun further demanded that Wizkid stop associating himself with Fela’s image, including references and tattoos linked to the Afrobeat pioneer.
