...Gov Fubara approves immediate employment of children of fallen servicemen in Rivers State
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the immediate employment of children of fallen servicemen in the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of military families and security personnel.
The directive was announced on Thursday at the Government House in Port Harcourt during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony for 2026, an annual event held to honour officers and soldiers who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
Governor Fubara said the decision was aimed at providing socio-economic relief to families of deceased military personnel, describing employment as a practical way of supporting widows and dependents left behind. He disclosed that the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, had been instructed to ensure the immediate execution of the directive.
“This is part of our way of showing socio-economic support to the families,” the governor said, stressing that the promised jobs must be implemented without delay.
Fubara also reiterated the state government’s resolve to continue working closely with military formations and other security agencies operating in Rivers State. According to him, the administration will sustain logistical and welfare support to enhance their operational effectiveness in addressing security challenges.
While paying tribute to serving and fallen soldiers, the governor acknowledged the sacrifices of troops deployed in various parts of the country, including the North-East against insurgency, the North-West and North-Central regions battling banditry and kidnapping, as well as military operations in the South-East and South-South targeting pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft.
He also honoured Nigerian soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the civil war, international peacekeeping missions, and recent counter-insurgency operations. In addition, he commended President Bola Tinubu for ongoing efforts to strengthen the Armed Forces through improved welfare, modern equipment, and renewed focus on internal security.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State chapter, Kuu Aminkipo Promise, expressed gratitude to the state government for its continued support to veterans and their families. He particularly appreciated the launch of the 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund, which was flagged off with a ₦100 million donation by the governor.
Promise described the gesture as a source of reassurance to ex-servicemen, widows, and dependents of fallen heroes, noting that it reflected the state’s recognition of their sacrifices.
The ceremony concluded with a call for sustained national unity and collective responsibility in supporting the Armed Forces and families of those who died in the line of duty.
