APC in Rivers Sounds Alarm Over Assembly’s Impeachment Push, Warns of Party Crisis

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has raised concerns over the ongoing impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma-Ordu, warning that the action could deepen internal fractures and threaten the party’s future in the state.

In a statement issued on Friday by its factional Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the party leadership under Chief Emeka Beke criticised the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and other lawmakers for pursuing what it described as a risky political path at a sensitive moment for the APC.

According to the party, lawmakers who publicly profess loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu have, paradoxically, aligned themselves with a process that undermines the party’s collective interest and long-term growth in Rivers State. The statement accused the Assembly of driving what it termed a “choreographed legislative coup” that could weaken the party’s standing and cohesion.

Nwauju said the party had carefully reviewed the developments leading to the Assembly’s decision to push forward with impeachment proceedings and concluded that the move amounted to an unnecessary legislative overreach. He noted that the action was particularly troubling given the involvement of some lawmakers identified with the APC.

While acknowledging that the legislature is constitutionally empowered under Sections 129 and 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to initiate impeachment, the APC warned that such powers are not without limits. The party argued that the interpretation of Section 188, especially its political implications, requires caution to avoid actions that could destabilise both governance and party unity.

The statement also urged the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, to abide strictly by existing court orders restraining him from receiving or acting on impeachment-related resolutions from the House of Assembly.

Beyond the state, the Rivers APC appealed to the national leadership of the party to intervene swiftly. It called on the National Working Committee to activate internal disciplinary and conflict-resolution mechanisms provided under Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s 2022 Constitution, warning that failure to act could expose the APC to public embarrassment and deepen internal discord.

The party concluded by stressing that restraint, internal dialogue and respect for legal processes remain critical if the APC is to maintain relevance, unity and electoral strength in Rivers State amid the current political uncertainty.
