The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has reaffirmed his commitment to the development of women’s football in Nigeria, with a focus on providing the Super Falcons with competitive opportunities and fostering growth at the grassroots level.

Speaking after the Super Falcons’ valiant 2-1 loss to France in Angers on Saturday night, Gusau highlighted the significance of securing grade-A matches for the national team. He expressed pride in the team’s performance, particularly the contributions of newly discovered homegrown players introduced during the game.

“We promised Nigerians that any time we have a window, we’ll organize grade-A matches for our national teams,” Gusau said. “This was one of them, and you saw the discovery of some of our home girls. They performed extremely well, and I’m highly delighted with their performance. By the grace of God, we’ll give them all the support they need going into the WAFCON in July in Morocco.”

Gusau emphasized the importance of exposing home-based players to international competition. He cited the team’s game against Algeria as another example where local talents were given opportunities to compete with higher-profile teams. “We will do whatever we can to ensure they are well prepared before going to the WAFCON in Morocco,” he assured.

The NFF President also spoke about plans to enhance the women’s game across the country. He announced a proposed policy requiring every premier league club to establish a female counterpart team, aligning with global trends to strengthen women’s football.
“We need to do more to invest in our female football. We will see how we can come out with a policy that makes it compulsory for each of our premier league clubs to have a female counterpart team. That’s the trend worldwide, and it’s the only way we can improve our women’s football,” Gusau stated.

The Super Falcons will be looking to make their 15th WAFCON appearance, the record-holders with 11 titles, will compete alongside 11 other nations in Morrocco from July 5 to July 26, 2025.
