Nigeria’s Super Eagles dropped significantly in the latest FIFA men’s rankings, falling from 36th to 44th globally. The rankings, released on Thursday, also show Nigeria slipping from fourth to fifth in Africa.
Morocco remains Africa’s highest-ranked team at 14th worldwide, followed by Senegal in 17th place globally and second on the continent. Egypt occupies the third spot in Africa, ranked 33rd in the world, while Algeria is fourth at 37th. Nigeria’s decline places them at fifth in Africa.
The Super Eagles’ ranking slump is attributed to poor results in their recent AFCON 2025 qualifiers. They managed a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Abidjan but suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Rwanda after leading 1-0.
On the global stage, Argentina holds the top spot, with France and Spain in second and third positions respectively. England and Brazil complete the top five, while Portugal and the Netherlands are ranked sixth and seventh.
The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking is scheduled for release on December 19, 2024.
