The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved to reassert its national ambition, declaring itself revitalised and battle-ready for future elections following a closed-door strategy session with former Vice President Namadi Sambo in Abuja.
The meeting, held Tuesday evening in the federal capital, brought together senior party leaders and the former vice president, who used the opportunity to reaffirm his loyalty to the PDP and offer counsel on rebuilding internal cohesion and electoral strength. Emerging from the talks, PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), said the engagement marked another step in the party’s broader effort to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Turaki disclosed that Sambo, who served as vice president under former President Goodluck Jonathan, emphasized the need for unity, strict adherence to party rules and a transparent democratic process as the PDP charts its comeback. According to him, the party is focused on restoring credibility and competitiveness across the country.
Addressing speculations surrounding the 2027 presidential race, Turaki confirmed that the PDP has resolved to zone its presidential ticket to the southern part of Nigeria. This decision, he said, opens the door to all qualified southern aspirants, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, should he choose to contest.
“We have taken a clear position as a party to zone the presidential ticket to the South,” Turaki stated. “It is open to every PDP member from the southern part of the country. The process will be open, transparent and fair, creating a level playing field for all.”
He stressed that while consultations are ongoing, the party remains committed to equity and internal democracy, noting that no aspirant would be imposed on members.
With renewed consultations involving key party figures and a clear zoning signal ahead of 2027, the PDP appears to be laying the groundwork for a competitive return to national power. Party leaders say the focus now is on unity, fairness and strategic engagement as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.
